Chapter IV — Raconteur Road
Information — Uncertainty as a physical quantity.
Information is what is left when uncertainty is resolved. The light that hits the silicon resolves the question of where, and when, and how bright. Eight weeks at sea is a high-uncertainty state; the boat arriving in Houston is the answer. Shannon and Gibbs wrote the same equation.
Sociable weavers, the archive
A thousand birds build one nest over a hundred years, and not one of them holds the plan. Each generation adds a room, repairs a tunnel, remembers a little of what the last one knew. It is the closest thing the Kalahari has to a library, and it is made entirely of grass.
No one bird knows the nest. The nest knows itself.
Cederberg, the first upload
Someone stood here with ochre and a steady hand and tried to send a message forward — an eland, a line of running men, a thing that mattered enough to fix to a wall. Three thousand years later it is fading, but it arrived. Most messages do not last a week.
The oldest hard drive is a rock, and it still reads.
